Far more extensive than this simple page is Alan Wood's page, described as A guide to displaying
thousands of foreign and special characters in Web pages, with the aid of Unicode, plus notes on suitable multilingual
browsers, fonts, editors and other utilities. Includes lists of the characters in each Unicode range that can be used
to test browsers and fonts.

Possibly the most up to date list around is at W3C. Their glyphs are images, so copying them will not result in a glyph that you can paste into your HTML. Consequently you'll know what it should look like even if your browser can't read it. Many glyphs can't be read by any current browser - these images show what it will look like when browsers catch up.
Character entity references for ISO 8859-1 (Latin-1) characters, symbols, mathematical symbols, arrows, Greek letters, markup-significant and internationalization characters are available at algonquinstudios.

UnicodeChecker has been an invaluable tool. From earthlingsoft's description, “UnicodeChecker is an application for Mac OS X that displays information for every code point from the Unicode Standard 4.0. ...Apart from their numerical value, you can find characters by their Unicode name or by selecting one of the Unicode Character Blocks from the menu.”

In HTML some special characters can be represented in a contemporary browser in several ways. I did these tests so that I could see all the ways in one place, and which of them worked in enough browsers to be worth using.
Since character references are well documented in other places (see links below) I narrowed the scope to finding those character references that worked in all of the version 5.2+ browsers that were tested and those that only work in some of them.
There are several ways to display a character:
&gives you an ampersand (&).&. Decimal encoding works withcharset=iso-8859-1in the document head.&. Hexicimal (8-bit) encoding works withcharset=utf-8in the document head.Modern browsers are supposed to default to the character encoding specified in the document head. This page has
charset=utf-8specified in the document head and I had the same results for this page with utf-8 or Western (Latin) selected in the preferences of the 5 browsers that I could test it in.Glyphs images are slightly different in various fonts.

Among the browsers iCab 3+ was the grand prize winner, with Safari and Opera close behind; IE was the loser.
The Windows results were found with the help of many people at css-d and SitePoint, as well as several BrowserCam visits. Tests were done for Opera 6-8, Mozilla 1.5, Netscape 6 & 7, and Internet Explorer 5 & 6.
On my Mac with OS 10.3, I was able to test Opera 6.02-8.5, Mozilla 1.4 - 1.7, Safari 1.1.1 - 1.3, Internet Explorer 5.2.3, Firebird/Firefox 0.7 - 1.06 and Netscape 7-7.1.
There were partial test results for other versions too. The browser's version didn't make a difference after version 4. The only exceptions to this were between IE5 & IE6; IE5 didn't understand NON-BREAKING HYPHEN or DOUBLE LOW LINE, but IE6 did; and iCab joined the modern age. It's very rare for a browser's font recognition to get worse; but Opera dropped these miscellaneous technical symbols: HOUSE, REVERSED NOT SIGN, TOP HALF INTEGRAL and BOTTOM HALF INTEGRAL.
Reasons for failures
Any Windows system since 98 has a big chunk of Unicode installed; the problem is that this information, in IE, is only used by fonts. This makes some sense in a True Type environment, because the revised TT fonts are designated by their Unicode hex number on any operating system.
When the IE Windows user doesn't have certain core fonts installed (especially Arial), they will be unable to read (or write) anything but basic Latin and math on their machine, including your web page. These fonts are included with a standard installation, and they can also be downloaded for free. Codestyle's “Windows font survey results” indicate that over 92% of participants in their survey, since 2001, have Arial installed. To further complicate matters, Windows 95 and early 98 installations have a different version of the Arial and Times fonts, and so don't get some of the most standard character references (for example the square root sign). There was a free update, but not everyone installed it.
If you don't see a square root sign here √ you need to do some (free) system updating. Microsoft has removed their "Web Core Fonts pack" from their site,
More Unicode can be read if you have 'Arial Unicode MS' or 'Lucida Sans Unicode' installed. It's supplied with Microsoft Office 2000, FrontPage 2000, Office XP and Publisher 2002. Codestyle's survey results indicate that 82% of participants have 'Lucida Sans Unicode' installed. Lucida is a registered trademark of Bigelow & Holmes Inc., and they made a freeware version of 'Sans Unicode', which is available here, along with 'Arial Unicode MS' and several other unicode fonts. Either of these fonts will also bring Netscape to its full potential. Multilingual Unicode TrueType Fonts on the Internet provides many more sources.
